My first brush with the Koenji Awaodori was in August last year when, being inspired by the amazing awaodori photography of Jason Arney, I took up the challenge to go and shoot the mega event (click here to see the shots from last year).
This year, even though the weather wasn’t great, I went to Koenji towards the evening to see if I could get some photographs. The street performances are the main attraction but due to large crowds, there was no way I could find a suitable spot where I could position myself. So I moved into the narrower by-lane, where the performances are not as grand but the freedom to move closer to the performers makes it a lot of fun.
