I have been quite critical of how Japan handled the response to the coronavirus crisis. They did everything wrong, yet, somehow, a month and a half after the state of emergency was announced in the country, today, it has been lifted completely. The number of new infections remains low and the death rate is astonishingly low considering the country’s unique demographic profile. Assuming things will get even better from this point on, Japan has pulled off quite a miracle. There was no sign at one point that we would see such a rapid improvement in the country. What happened in Japan and how the country managed to dodge this bullet should be studied very carefully by the experts. If the “Nippon Model” is indeed the best one, then this should make it to the rule books for dealing with global pandemics. I am very keen to understand the scientific reasons behind this magical turn of events in the country. Well done, Japan… you never cease to amaze me! Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that the relaxation of restrictions will not backfire. Cheers!
